The COVID-19 pandemic was first detected in Georgia on March 2, 2020, and the first death was reported ten days later. Governor Brian Kemp declared a public health emergency and ordered educational institutions to close. Statewide restrictions later included limits on gatherings, closures of bars and nightclubs, and a shelter-in-place order. By April 17, 2021, Georgia had reported 868,163 confirmed cases and 17,214 deaths.
