Daniel Johnston

Daniel Dale Johnston was an American singer, musician and artist associated with outsider, lo-fi and alternative music. Much of his work consisted of cassettes he recorded alone at home. He developed a local following in Austin, Texas, during the 1980s by distributing tapes while working at McDonald's. Johnston also made visual art that was exhibited in galleries internationally. His life and mental illness were examined in the 2005 documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston.
