Anselm of Canterbury (1033/4–1109) was a Benedictine abbot, philosopher and theologian who served as Archbishop of Canterbury from 1093 to 1109. During the Investiture Controversy, he defended Church interests in England and was exiled twice for resisting Kings William II and Henry I. His writings combined mystical and rational approaches. He is regarded as the originator of the ontological argument and the satisfaction theory of atonement, and was later canonized and named a Doctor of the Church.
