It occurs in the western Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, northern Bahamas, along the Yucatán Peninsula, and along Brazil's coast. It inhabits shallow seagrass beds, mud banks, and floating algae. The species can reach 10 cm in length and is ovoviviparous, with males carrying eggs in a brood pouch until hatching.
