Rings of Uranus

  • Planets and Dwarf Planets

The rings of Uranus are a system of 13 planetary rings, intermediate in complexity between those of Saturn and the simpler systems of Jupiter and Neptune. They were discovered in 1977, although William Herschel reported possible observations in 1789. The rings are extremely dark, narrow and mostly opaque, with little dust. They are thought to be no more than 600 million years old and may have formed through collisions that fragmented former moons.
