Cassowaries are flightless ratite birds in the genus Casuarius and order Casuariiformes. They are native to tropical forests in New Guinea, the Moluccas and northeastern Australia. Three species are extant: the southern cassowary, northern cassowary and dwarf cassowary. Cassowaries are wary of humans but can cause serious or fatal injuries when provoked, and are known to attack dogs and people.
