Ovulation triggered by mating-related external stimuli
Uncommon
Induced ovulation is an ovulatory process in some animal species that do not ovulate cyclically or spontaneously. It occurs when a component of coitus triggers the pre-ovulatory luteinizing hormone surge and ovulation. Possible externally derived stimuli include sperm, pheromones, and mechanical stimulation during copulation. Female cats, rabbits, ferrets, and camels are listed as induced ovulators. In Bactrian camels, one study concluded that seminal plasma, rather than spermatozoa, induced ovulation.
