Makemake is a dwarf planet in the Kuiper belt beyond Neptune and the fourth largest dwarf planet and trans-Neptunian object in the Solar System. Discovered in 2005 at Palomar Observatory, it helped prompt Pluto's 2006 reclassification. Its highly reflective surface is largely frozen methane, with reddish-brown tholins. Makemake has one unnamed moon and evidence of geochemical activity and cryovolcanism. Its great distance means that it has not been visited by a space probe.
