The dodo (Raphus cucullatus) was an extinct flightless bird endemic to Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. It belonged to Raphina, alongside the Rodrigues solitaire, within the pigeon and dove family Columbidae. First recorded by Dutch sailors in 1598, it was hunted while invasive species and habitat destruction affected the island. The last widely accepted sighting was in 1662. The dodo later became a widely recognised symbol of extinction and obsolescence.
