Bipolar disorder, previously called manic depression, is a mental disorder marked by periods of depression and abnormally elevated mood that can last days, weeks, or sometimes months. Severe elevated mood or mood associated with psychosis is called mania, while less impairing elevated mood is hypomania. The condition includes bipolar I disorder, bipolar II disorder and cyclothymia. Treatment can include mood stabilizers, anticonvulsants, atypical antipsychotics and psychotherapy.
