The neon tetra (Paracheirodon innesi) is a freshwater fish species in the family Acestrorhamphidae, within the order Characiformes. It is the type species of its genus and is native to blackwater and clearwater streams of the Amazon basin in South America. Its bright colouring helps it remain visible to other neon tetras in dark blackwater streams and has made it widely popular with freshwater fish hobbyists.
