Desmond Thomas Doss was a United States Army corporal who served as a combat medic with an infantry company during World War II. Guided by his religious beliefs, he refused to carry a weapon. He received two Bronze Star Medals for actions on Guam and in the Philippines. At the Battle of Okinawa, he saved 75 to 100 men while acting on his own and became a Medal of Honor recipient.
