Barter is a trading system in which participants directly exchange goods or services without using money or another medium of exchange. It generally involves immediate reciprocal exchange and is usually bilateral, though it can be multilateral through a trade exchange. In developed countries, barter is generally limited alongside monetary systems, but it may replace money during monetary crises. Anthropologists have found no evidence that money emerged from barter.
