Genitourinary syndrome of menopause

Genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM), formerly called atrophic vaginitis, describes physical changes in the vulva, vagina and lower urinary tract caused by reduced estrogen, along with associated sexual and urinary symptoms. Symptoms can include pain during penetrative sex, vaginal dryness or itchiness, and urinary urgency or burning. It usually requires ongoing treatment. Topical estrogen is the first-line treatment, and urinary tract infections may occur as a complication.
