J. Edgar Hoover was an American law enforcement administrator who directed the Bureau of Investigation from 1924 and became the first director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1935. He led the BOI and FBI for 48 years under eight presidents. Hoover expanded the FBI, introduced centralized fingerprint files and forensic laboratories, and developed a national blacklist. He later became controversial for abuses of power, including illegal surveillance and harassment of dissidents and civil rights leaders.
