Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid is Bob Dylan's twelfth studio album and first soundtrack album. Released by Columbia Records on July 13, 1973, it was made for Sam Peckinpah's film of the same name, in which Dylan appeared as the character Alias. The soundtrack is mainly instrumental and includes “Knockin' on Heaven's Door”, a trans-Atlantic Top 20 hit. The album was certified gold by the RIAA.
