Metropolis is a 1927 German expressionist science-fiction silent film directed by Fritz Lang and written by Thea von Harbou with Lang. Set in a futuristic urban dystopia, it follows Freder and Maria as they seek to bridge the divide between workers and the city master. The film was substantially cut after its premiere, then restored through several efforts. It is now widely regarded as highly influential and was added to UNESCO’s Memory of the World International Register in 2001.
