Cutthroat trout are a clade of four fish species in the salmon family, native to cold-water tributaries in North America’s Pacific Ocean, Rocky Mountain, and Great Basin regions. They usually live and spawn in clear, well-oxygenated rivers with gravel bottoms, and also reproduce in clear, cold lakes. Their name refers to red coloration beneath the lower jaw. Some subspecies are threatened by habitat loss and introduced non-native species.
