The Mexican prairie dog (Cynomys mexicanus) is a diurnal burrowing rodent native to north-central Mexico. It is classified as a keystone species because of its large effects on other species and the environment. Agricultural pest treatment has contributed to its endangered status. It is closely related to squirrels, chipmunks and marmots, and originated about 230,000 years ago from an isolated population of Cynomys ludovicianus.
