Belgium, officially the Kingdom of Belgium, is a country in Northwestern Europe in the Low Countries. It borders the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg, France, and the North Sea. Brussels is its capital and largest metropolitan region. Belgium has a federal system organized around three regions and linguistic communities, and is one of the six founding members of the European Union. Independent since 1830, it was among the earliest participants in the Industrial Revolution.
