Fiji, officially the Republic of Fiji, is an archipelagic country in Melanesia, Oceania, in the South Pacific Ocean. Its archipelago includes more than 330 islands, around 110 of them permanently inhabited, plus more than 500 islets. Most people live on the two major islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Fiji became independent from British colonial rule in 1970 and was declared a republic after coups in 1987.
