Radio operator

  • Occupations

A radio operator, formerly called a wireless operator in British and Commonwealth English, is responsible for operating a ship radio station and handling technical matters aboard. The profession has become largely obsolete as radio-based tasks have been automated, but radio operators are still employed in maritime and aviation fields. Radio transmission is now usually only one of several duties. During World War II, aircraft wireless operators were often abbreviated as WOp or WOP.
