Barry der Menschenretter (1800–1814) was a mountain rescue dog for the Great St Bernard Hospice in Switzerland and Italy. Of a breed later called the St. Bernard, he was lighter built than the modern breed. He was credited with saving more than 40 lives. Contrary to a legend, he was not killed during a rescue, but retired to Bern. His preserved skin is held by the Natural History Museum of Bern.
