The capybara, also called the greater capybara, is the largest living rodent. Native to all South American countries except Chile, it is a semiaquatic herbivore that lives near freshwater in savannas and dense forests. It mainly eats grasses and aquatic plants. Capybaras are highly social, usually living in groups of 10 to 20 individuals, although groups may reach 100.
