Augustus, born Gaius Octavius and also known as Octavian, was the founder of the Roman Empire and its first emperor. He ruled from 27 BC until AD 14. During his reign, the principate was established, combining autocratic military control with nominal deference to Roman republican institutions. He enlarged the empire, reformed taxation and currency, developed roads and public services, and was succeeded by Tiberius.
