The Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, known as the Knights Templar, were a Catholic military order founded in 1118. Based on Jerusalem's Temple Mount, they defended pilgrims and became major participants in the Crusades. The order also built a broad economic network and used early banking techniques. After support declined, Pope Clement V disbanded it in 1312 under pressure from King Philip IV of France.
