The flute is a family of woodwind instruments and an aerophone, producing sound from a vibrating column of air as the player blows across an opening. A player is called a flautist or flutist. Paleolithic flutes are the earliest known identifiable musical instruments, with examples found in present-day Germany dating to about 53,000–45,000 years ago. Flute traditions also have long histories in Asia and the Americas.
