Auschwitz was a complex of more than 40 concentration and extermination camps operated by Nazi Germany in occupied Poland during World War II and the Holocaust. It included Auschwitz I, Auschwitz II-Birkenau, Auschwitz III-Monowitz, and subcamps. From 1942 to late 1944, Jews from across German-occupied Europe were deported to Birkenau. Of 1.3 million people sent to Auschwitz, 1.1 million were murdered. Soviet troops liberated the camp on 27 January 1945.
