Shogi, also called Japanese chess, is a two-player abstract strategy board game popular in Japan. Standard shogi is played on an 81-square board with 40 pieces. Captured opposing pieces are retained as pieces in hand and may be dropped back into play on a later turn. The game belongs to the same family as Western chess, chaturanga, xiangqi, Indian chess, makruk, and janggi.
