Justinian I, also called Justinian the Great, was a Roman emperor who ruled from 527 to 565. His reign pursued a partial restoration of former Western Roman territories through campaigns in North Africa, Italy, and southern Iberia. He oversaw the uniform rewriting of Roman law in the Corpus Juris Civilis and a building program that included Hagia Sophia. His reign also involved conflict with the Sasanian Empire and religious disputes among Christians.
