Standard deviation is a measure of the variation of a variable’s values about its arithmetic average. Low standard deviation means values tend to be close to the average, while high standard deviation means they are spread over a wider range. It is the square root of variance and is expressed in the same unit as the data. It is commonly denoted by the lowercase Greek letter sigma.
