Confucius, born Kong Qiu, was a Chinese philosopher of the Spring and Autumn period. His teachings, known as Confucianism, emphasized personal and governmental morality, harmonious social relationships, righteousness, kindness, sincerity and virtuous leadership. He advocated filial piety, family loyalty, ancestor veneration and respect for elders. His teachings were compiled in the Analects after his death, and later received official sanction under Emperor Wu of Han.
