The Venus flytrap, Dionaea muscipula, is a carnivorous plant native to temperate and subtropical wetlands of North Carolina and South Carolina in the United States. It is the only species in the genus Dionaea and belongs to the family Droseraceae. Its leaf traps use sensitive hairs to detect prey, chiefly insects and arachnids, then clamp shut.
