The heart is a muscular organ in humans and other animals that pumps blood through blood vessels. Together, the heart and blood vessels form the circulatory system, which delivers oxygen and nutrients to tissues and carries metabolic waste. In humans, it lies between the lungs in the mediastinum and has four chambers. Its rhythm is controlled by pacemaker cells in the sinoatrial node.
