Kamikaze were Japanese Special Attack Unit military aviators who carried out suicide attacks against Allied naval vessels in the final stages of the Pacific campaign of World War II. Their aircraft were purpose-built or converted conventional planes loaded with explosives and deliberately crashed into enemy ships. The attacks began in October 1944. About 3,800 pilots died, and the attacks killed more than 7,000 Allied naval personnel.
