Napoleon III, born Charles-Louis Napoléon Bonaparte, was President of France from 1848 to 1852 and Emperor of the French from 1852 until 1870. He founded the Second French Empire after seizing power in 1851. His rule included industrial and infrastructure expansion, the reconstruction of Paris, social reforms and an enlarged colonial empire. Captured after France's defeat by Prussia at Sedan, he was dethroned, exiled to the United Kingdom and died in 1873.
