The Three Musketeers is a French historical adventure novel written and published in 1844 by Alexandre Dumas, in collaboration with ghostwriter Auguste Maquet. Set from 1625 to 1628, it follows d'Artagnan as he travels to Paris hoping to join the Musketeers of the Guard. He befriends Athos, Porthos and Aramis, becoming involved in affairs of state and court. It is the first of Dumas's three d'Artagnan Romances.
