Betelgeuse is a red supergiant star in the equatorial constellation of Orion. Usually the night sky's tenth-brightest star, it is a reddish semiregular variable whose brightness changes over a main period near 400 days. Its radius is estimated at 640 to 764 times that of the Sun. Less than 10 million years old, it is expected to end in a type II supernova, most likely within 100,000 years.
