The Battle of Okinawa, codenamed Operation Iceberg, was a major Pacific War battle fought on Okinawa between United States Army and Marine Corps forces and the Imperial Japanese Army. It lasted from 1 April to 22 June 1945, following the capture of the Kerama Islands. The fighting involved intense naval, air and ground operations, including kamikaze attacks. It caused heavy Allied, Japanese and Okinawan casualties, and left Okinawa with Allied fleet anchorage, staging areas and airfields.
