Mont-Saint-Michel is a tidal island and mainland commune in Normandy, France, near the mouth of the Couesnon River. Its position allowed pilgrims to reach its abbey at low tide and provided natural defence. The island remained unconquered during the Hundred Years' War and was later used as a prison. Mont-Saint-Michel and its surrounding bay became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
