Potoos are a family of nocturnal, insect-eating birds in the order Nyctibiiformes. They are related to the oilbird and are sometimes called poor-me-ones after their calls. Seven species in two genera occur in tropical Central and South America, while fossils show that potoos also lived in Europe during the Paleogene. They hunt from perches and rest upright on tree stumps by day, using camouflage to resemble part of the stump.
