ILOVEYOU, also called the Love Bug or Loveletter, was a computer worm released on 4 May 2000. It spread mainly through email attachments sent to contacts in infected systems’ address books, using social engineering. Once executed, it overwrote files with its source code and tried to spread further. Created by Filipino student dropout Onel de Guzman, it affected an estimated 10% of internet-connected computers and caused approximately US$10 billion in damage.
