The Siege of Leningrad was an Axis military blockade of Leningrad, now Saint Petersburg, on the Eastern Front of World War II. Germany and Finland besieged the Soviet city for 872 days, from 1941 to 1944, without capturing it. Land routes were cut in September 1941, and starvation was widespread, particularly during the winter of 1941 to 1942. Supplies arrived by air, across Lake Ladoga and via the Road of Life. The siege ended on 27 January 1944.
