Siddhartha Gautama, commonly called the Buddha, was a wandering religious teacher who lived in the eastern Indo-Gangetic Plains during the 6th or 5th century BCE and founded Buddhism. Buddhist tradition describes his renunciation of home life, attainment of nirvana, and teaching activity. His teachings include the Middle Way, the Four Noble Truths, and the Noble Eightfold Path. A monastic order, or sangha, formed around his teachings.
