Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and is known as the Red Planet because of its orange-red appearance. It is a desert-like rocky planet with a thin, primarily carbon dioxide atmosphere. Its terrain includes northern plains, southern cratered highlands, extinct volcanoes, and Valles Marineris. Mars has two small natural satellites, Phobos and Deimos, and retains water in the ground and atmosphere, but has no bodies of liquid surface water.
