George Herman "Babe" Ruth was an American professional baseball player whose Major League Baseball career lasted from 1914 to 1935. He began as a left-handed pitcher for the Boston Red Sox and became most famous as a power-hitting outfielder for the New York Yankees. With the Yankees, he helped win seven American League pennants and four World Series championships. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936 as one of its first five members.
