Olympus Mons is a large shield volcano on Mars. Measured by the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter, it is 21.287 kilometres high, about 2.5 times Mount Everest's elevation above sea level. It is Mars's tallest volcano and planetary mountain, and is approximately tied with Rheasilvia on Vesta as the tallest mountain discovered in the Solar System. Formed during the Martian Hesperian Period, it last erupted 25 million years ago.
