The Altmark incident was a World War II naval incident between British destroyers and the German tanker Altmark on 16 and 17 February 1940. In neutral Norwegian waters, HMS Cossack boarded Altmark in Jøssingfjorden and freed roughly 300 Allied prisoners. Eight German sailors were killed, ten were wounded, and one British sailor was wounded. Germany later claimed the boarding violated international law and Norwegian neutrality.
