The AK-47, officially the Avtomat Kalashnikova 1947, is an assault rifle developed in the Soviet Union by small-arms designer Mikhail Kalashnikov. Design work began in 1945, and the rifle was accepted by the Soviet Armed Forces in 1949. It originated the Kalashnikov family of rifles. The AK-47 and its variants have been widely used by armed forces, irregular forces and insurgencies worldwide, with their popularity attributed to reliability, low production cost and ease of use.
