Linux is a family of free and open-source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, first released by Linus Torvalds in 1991. Linux systems are often packaged as distributions that combine the kernel with supporting software and libraries. Examples include Debian, Fedora Linux, Linux Mint, Arch Linux, and Ubuntu. Originally designed as a Unix clone, Linux is distributed under the copyleft GPL license and has been ported to many platforms.
